Who says sarmies are strictly for lunchboxes? The summer holidays are the perfect time for casual dinners, picnics and pool parties. These four delicious dishes are all served on a roll – they’re easy to make, serve and eat! Best enjoyed amongst friends and family. No cutlery needed.

Sweet and Sour Hake Sandwiches

Nothing shouts holiday by the sea like fresh South African hake fried to perfection! Now you can serve up that summer nostalgia with our crunchy hake sandwiches. Battered hake fillets fried golden, drenched in our Royco Sweet and Sour Sauce, and topped with fresh coleslaw. These indulgent rolls are great for big family gatherings and parties alike.

Top Tip: The carbonation in the water or beer used in the batter creates the bubbles and extra crunch. So, only make the batter for this recipe right before frying the fish.

Burgers with Royco Sauces

Burgers are always a hit, but if you allow your guests to customise their burgers with a ‘Build Your Own Burger Bar’ your get-together will be the talk of the holidays. Start with a selection of patties - beef, chicken and veggie covers every dietary preference. Ensure you have loads of toppings to choose from, including slices of tomato, lettuce, gherkins and cheese. Take it to pro-level with caramelised onions and pickled jalapenos. Lastly, a selection of Royco sauces - Creamy MushroomFour Cheese and Black Pepper. Each sauce can be made by simply mixing the contents of the sachet with boiling water.

Top Tip: Serve on paper plates and you’ll have no dishes to wash.

Hot (or not) Prego Rolls

These Portuguese steak sandwiches are perfect for pool parties and skottel picnics. Thinly cut sirloin steaklets are marinated in Royco Beef Marinade and a selection of aromatics. You can divide your marinating meat into two batches - one spiced with chilli, and one left mild - allowing guests to pick their preference. They’re quick to cook and should be served the traditional way, on a floury roll. To bulk up the meal, serve alongside potato chips made in the airfryer or oven.

Top Tip: Ask your grocery store butcher to cut the steaklets to the right thickness for you. And the day before your event, pre-order Portuguese rolls with your grocery store bakery.

Savoury Mince Jaffles

Jaffles are like toasted sandwiches, and they can be made over the fire. To make a jaffle you need a jaffle iron. It’s a domed iron clamp where two slices of bread and the filling are placed inside and held together while toasting. Now, you can put pretty much anything in a jaffle, but two of our favourite fillings are Savoury Mince and Butter Chicken. These oozing sandwiches are perfect for camping trips and small family gatherings around the fire.

Top tip: You can buy jaffle irons at outdoor stores, and anywhere that sells braai paraphernalia. They make a great gift for braai and camping enthusiasts.
