A sophisticated side dish for festive dinners, or gourmet braais. The fine slices of onion add a sweetness to this savoury classic.

  • 4 large potatoes, sliced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 400 ml cold milk
  • 100g grated cheddar cheese

Want to surprise your family with something special? Make individual servings by layering the ingredients in 4 ramekins instead of a single dish.

Method

  1. 1.
    Pre-heat the oven to 180°C.
  2. 2.
    Mix packet contents with a small amount of the milk & mix to a smooth paste. Slowly stir in the rest of the milk & mix well.
  3. 3.
    Layer sliced potatoes and slices of onion in a greased, ovenproof dish (1.2 litre) and pour sauce evenly over potatoes and onions. Top with grated cheese.
  4. 4.
    Bake uncovered for 45 - 60 min or until potatoes are cooked.
  5. 5.
    Serve as a side at your next braai, or a festive gathering.
